How to spot tech support scams

Remote support is a legitimate service, but scammers abuse the same method. Knowing the difference protects your accounts.

How do scammers work?

They usually come at you in one of two ways. One is a phone call saying "there is a virus on your computer". The other is a fake warning page that opens in your browser with an alarm sound and a message like "Your computer is locked, call this number". The goal is to convince you to install a remote access program and then get into your bank account.

Warning signs

A legitimate support company will never call you and ask for your banking password, your card or your SMS code. Neither will we.

What should you do?

  1. Hang up. You do not have to be polite.
  2. For a fake warning in your browser, close the tab. If it will not close, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager and end the browser.
  3. Do not install any program and do not share any codes.

If they already got in

  1. Cut the internet connection immediately (unplug the cable or turn off Wi-Fi).
  2. Call your bank and have your accounts and cards blocked.
  3. From a different device, change your email and banking passwords.
  4. Remove the remote access program they had you install, and run a virus scan on the computer.
  5. Report it to your local cybercrime unit (in Turkey, the police cybercrime department).
