1. Is it really stuck, or still working?
Big updates (especially the yearly feature updates) can take 1 to 2 hours. If the disk light keeps blinking, the work is going on, even when the percentage does not move. Wait at least 2 hours. If the screen is fully frozen, the disk light never flickers and more than 3 hours have passed, it is stuck.
2. Restart the computer
Holding the power button is the last resort. Try Ctrl + Alt + Del first. If the computer responds, restart normally with Start > Power > Restart. If you have to force it off, Windows usually rolls the changes back and starts normally. Then try the update again.
3. Free up disk space
Windows updates need 10 to 20 GB of temporary space. Go to Settings > System > Storage, clean "Temporary files" and remove programs you do not use. Leave at least 20 GB free on the C: drive.
4. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and click "Run" next to "Windows Update". The tool checks the services and temporary files and tries to fix what it finds. When it finishes, restart and click "Check for updates" in Settings > Windows Update.
5. Reset the update components
If the problem stays, the downloaded update files may be corrupt. Type "cmd" in Start, right-click "Command Prompt" and choose "Run as administrator". Type these commands one by one, pressing Enter after each:
net stop wuauservnet stop bitsren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.oldren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.oldnet start wuauservnet start bits
Windows rebuilds a clean SoftwareDistribution folder on its own. Restart and check for updates again. Once everything works, you can delete the ".old" folders.
6. Repair system files with sfc and DISM
In the same administrator Command Prompt, run these in order:
sfc /scannowDISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Each can take 10 to 30 minutes. The percentage may sit still for a long time. Do not close the window. When they finish, restart and try the update.
Before a big update, back up your important files to an external drive or cloud storage. Updates rarely damage files or break startup, but when they do, a backup turns a disaster into a minor annoyance.
7. Be careful with "Pause updates"
Windows Update lets you pause updates for 1 to 5 weeks. Use it briefly and on purpose. Pausing does not fix anything, and delayed security patches leave your computer exposed. Fix the cause instead of postponing the update.
8. When to ask for help
Stop if the same error code keeps returning, the computer loops at startup, or the steps above change nothing. More attempts can make things worse. Note the error code (for example 0x80070002 or 0x800f0922) and send it to us.
